John Noreyko

When you think of Jazz, the tuba doesn’t usually come to mind. However, for the last 30 years, John has honed his skills, not only as a jazz artist, but also as a studio musician. Noreyko has worked with Sigur Ros, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Fiona Apple, Dwight Yoakum, and since 1985, has performed jazz at Disneyland.

“My career has been centered on advancing the tuba in all forms of music, especially jazz,” states Noreyko. His project, TUBOP, pushes the limits of what is possible. He currently co-hosts the “Conical Supremacy” podcast.

USC Bass Tuba Quartet

The USC Bass Tuba Quartet as an outgrowth of the professional Los Angeles Tuba Quartet composed of Jim Self, Tommy Johnson, Roger Bobo and Don Waldrop in the ’70s because Jim Self wanted Thornton students to get tuba chamber music experience. Each year four students of Tuba Studio play in the quartet.

The quartet has commissioned compositions and arrangements and performs a few times a year, including Tuba Christmas.

The quartet also attends competitions and took first prize in the chamber music competition at the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference in 2014.
